Kate Table Runner

Tutorial for making a Table Runner from the Kate Pillow pattern.

If you have been around here for a while, or know me very well, you know that I LOVE to decorate! Two of my favorite quilted home decor projects to make are pillows and table runners. I love them. They are usually quick and easy and you can change them out for all the holidays!!

I recently altered my Kate Pillow to make 5 smaller blocks to turn into a table runner. I thought Kate was a perfectly patriotic pattern for this since each block essentially uses 3 fabrics; in this case, red, white and blue!

Altering the Pattern

The Kate Pillow pattern produces a 20” block. But few people are going to want a 20” table runner, that’s a little large for most tables. So I altered the pattern to make it a 12” block, which is a pretty standard size for a table runner. The alteration is easy…..instead of cutting 12” squares, you will cut 8” squares. Otherwise, follow the pattern exactly. Need the pattern? I’ll send it free for joining my email list. However, I am working on a new FREE pattern, so it will be a limited time before this changes. Martha Jane Creations celebrates an anniversary in August, so I would make sure to get the Kate Pillow pattern free before then, hint hint!

Fabric Requirements

Yes, the Kate Pillow pattern is considered FQ friendly, but the runner is even more FQ friendly. You have a couple options, depending on the look you are going for. Each FQ will provide you with (4) 8” squares. Each block requires (1) 8” square of a Fabric A and a Fabric B, and (2) 8” squares of Background Fabric. So essentially you could use (2) FQs and 1/2 yard of background fabric and make a 4 block runner with mirrored blocks that would measure 12” x 48” finished.

I however, feel like everything is better in odd numbers; having a center point makes things more pleasing to the eye. So I made my runner with 5 total blocks, which measures 12” x 60” which is perfect for my table - a 4’ x 6’ farmhouse table that my daddy built me when I got married out of some Oak trees from the farm I grew up on!! I used (5) scrap blue fabrics and (5) scrap red fabrics, (1) 8” square from each. Then, still a half yard of a white background fabric to make mine very patriotic! I enjoy leaving out my patriotic decor from Memorial Day through the 4th of July!

Biggest thing to remember, you will need 2 colors and a background fabric per block! Otherwise, have fun!
